I woke up Thursday morning, a few days after our amazing trip to New York, with a call from Tre. “I need a huge favor.”

“What?”

“Could you keep Tracie for me for a little while?”

“I have to go to work for one. Besides, she doesn’t even know we date.”

“We can tell her today. It’s time anyway for my two favorite girls to get to know each other.”

I smiled at his sentiments.

“Can you call in? I have an emergency meeting with the city council. Chloe dropped Tracie off this morning without any warning to piss me off.”

“Why would she do that?”

“She found out that I brought you to New York and is probably trying to see if you spend the night regularly by popping up uninvited and unannounced.”

“I thought you said it’s been over for years. Why is she jealous and how did she even find out I was there?”

“Probably my messy younger sister who never liked Chloe because she could see through her before I did. Everyone knows she got pregnant to keep me and has been giving me hell ever since the oldest trick in the book didn’t work. She thought I wouldn’t want the rep of being an unwed father, especially when I decided to make a run for mayor. I never cared about formality and she knows that whenever I get married it will be for love and no other reason. I haven’t taken any woman out of town since her, and she recognizes that you and I are probably serious, so she’s pissed. It’s been over on my end and I deal with her jealous bullshit for the sake of Tracie.”

I digested his answer before responding, “I don’t know if it’s a good idea, Tre. I only met Tracie once. I don’t want her to be uncomfortable.”

“Raini, like her daddy, she liked you from the start. You’re all she talks about. I wanted you to meet. Now is as good a time as any. She’ll be fine.”

“You don’t think it’s too soon for me to meet her?”

“Rain, we’ve been together for two months and we just said we loved each other. I wouldn’t ask you to be my woman if I didn’t have any serious intentions. I’m a father, and if you’re going to be in my life, you need to get to know my daughter. If you don’t want to call in, I should be done no later than eleven or so.”

“Okay, that should give me more than enough time to make it to work,” I relented. “You want me to come there?”

“Please. Can you be here within thirty minutes?”

Tre lived twenty minutes away without traffic. “I should be able to get dressed and be there in thirty-five minutes or so.”
